This website provides information on the standardization of distributed power delivery systems.
The IEC TC 57 and TC 88 have published three crucial international standard series helping the utility in-dustry to improve managing, automate and monitor the electric power system delivery system, reduce costs for planning, engineering, operating, and managing, and contributing to reducing the proliferation of solu-tions, most of which were proprietary:
- IEC 61970 - Energy management system application program interface (EMS-API) - Part 301: Common Information Model (CIM)
- IEC 61850 - Communication networks and systems in substations
- IEC 61400-25 - Communications for monitoring and control of wind power plants (61850 extensions)
Current standardization activities deal with further application domains: Decentralized Energy Resources (DER), Hydro Power Systems, Power Quality Measurements, and Condition Monitoring.
The IEC TC 57 WG 17 (DER) has published first drafts for Decentralized Energy Resources:
- IEC 61850-7-420 - Communications Systems for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) -- DER Logical Nodes
The IEC 61850-7-420 defines extensions of the successful series IEC 61850 are crucial for the future electric power delivery systems.
The standard IEC 61850-7-420 comprises the communication with and within any distributed energy re-sources like photo voltaic systems, fuel cell systems, combined heat and power, etc. These systems are in-tegrated into the utility information and automation systems such that they are closely related to the stan-dard series IEC 61970 and IEC 61850.
